Stories from the Basement

Stories from the Basement: August 2016

by Donna Clark RN, Director

It seems strange to talk about a cold weather shelter during all this warm weather but winter is not far away. The planning committee of the Community Emergency Shelter Project has met and are addressing future needs. In past years the program has served 40-70 different men nightly from the first weekend in January to the last weekend in March. Churches participate providing space, supervision, food and emotional and spiritual support to the homeless men in our community. Many small churches who are a part of this outreach don’t have space in their churches but they work together as a team to maintain the shelter services.

In the past 3 years Wicomico Presbyterian Church has allowed the use of their Langeler Memorial Building on North Division Street for 4 weeks to use as a shelter site. This year that building is not available to the mission and we are looking for a new place to house the men in need of shelter. The building must be able to support 30-40 men, providing space for cots, eating area and bathroom facilities. Without a building we will only be able to provide shelter for 8 weeks instead of 12 weeks this winter. If you know of a facility that can be used in this manner please contact Donna Clark, dcnurseadvocate@hopeinc.comcastbiz.net, 443-944-5279.

Please help us continue to serve the homeless in our community
